Chapter 15: Booth Six

He was in the same flannel shirt.

He hadn't shaved, and there was a cup of Dot's coffee in front of him gone cold with a skin on it.

The diner had four customers at the counter, and every one of them was pretending not to watch.

I wiped my hands on my apron and slid into the booth across from him.

"How long have you been here?"

"Since she unlocked the door." He glanced at the counter. "She charged me for three coffees. I've had one."

"She charges for the view."

His mouth almost moved.

Then it didn't.

"Where's Lulu?"

"In the car with the driver. Eating a donut I'm going to hear about from her dentist."

He turned the cold cup in a slow circle.

"She made me promise to tell you Lake is fine. I said you'd know."

"I have him."

"I know. She checked her pocket twice."

Dot came by with the pot.

She filled my cup, not his, and stood there.

"Dot," I said.

"I'm only pouring," she said, and didn't move.

Nate looked up at her.

"You can stay," he said. "I'd rather say this in front of someone who'll hit me if I get it wrong."
