Chapter 15: The Source

They went into the command tent, and Ishkra shut the flap behind them, and for a moment nobody spoke.

Kanae sat on the camp stool with the black parchment on her knee.

The ink on it looked fresh.

Vorhaan stood in front of her with his hands at his sides, a seven-foot demon in a torn shirt.

He could not seem to look anywhere but at her face.

"Read it again," he said.

"I've read it twice."

"Then I'll tell you."

He did not sit.

He did not kneel yet either.

"Four days before the Greywater fight," he said, "the Lord's seers came to her in the night. They had been watching the Hero for a year. They said that a thread of gold ran out of his sword and across the Pass, and went on into the human lands, and ended in a woman."

"A woman," Kanae said.

"They called her the Source. They said that the Hero's strength was not his own. It was poured into him from somewhere, and where it came from, it could be cut."

The tent was very quiet.

"I was cursed by then," he said. "I was dying, and the Lord knew it. She gave me an order that I could carry out alone. She said, find the Source and bring her to me, and if she will not come, end her."

"And you came."

"I followed the thread. It was thin, and I was half blind, and I fell more than I walked." His voice roughened. "I had the order in my head with every step. If she will not come, end her."
