Chapter 11: Burnt Ends
The steel table was warm this time.
He had run hot water over it before I came.
I lay on my back on the clean metal with my sweater off and the lights low.
Ronan stood over me with a tin tray in his hands.
"Dinner was strange," he said.
"Dinner was Nonna seating you between two aunts and watching you eat," I said.
"One of them asked me if the Irish still use forks," he said.
"What did you say?"
"I said we save them for Sundays."
I laughed, and my stomach moved under his hand.
He set the tray beside my hip.
On it sat a pile of burnt ends, dark and glistening, the crusty edges of the brisket that he kept for himself.
Beside them was a little steel cup of sauce.
"Take off the rest," he said.
"You take it off."
"You start it," he reminded me.
"I'm starting it. I'm telling you to."
He undid my jeans and drew them down my legs with my underwear, and he folded them and put them on a stool.
I lay bare on the steel in the lamp light.
He took a burnt end between two fingers, dipped it in the sauce, and held it over my mouth.
I opened.
It was sweet and sharp and smoky, and it melted on my tongue.
A drop of sauce ran from the corner of my mouth to my chin.
His eyes followed it down.
"Hold still," he said.
He bent and licked it off my chin.
Then he took the cup and tipped it.
A thin warm line of sauce ran from the hollow of my throat down between my breasts to my navel.
I gasped.
It was slow and it tickled, and it woke up every inch of my skin.
"Ronan."
"Shh."
He put his mouth at my throat and followed the line down.
His tongue was wide and wet and slow, and his beard dragged over my skin.
Each pass of it sent heat curling through my belly.
He licked between my breasts and under them.
He licked the underside of one, then the other, and sucked a nipple clean.
I arched off the table with my hands in his hair.
"There's more," he said, and tipped the cup again.
