Chapter 12: Silver

The howls from the south went on, one after another, until the whole ridge was calling.

Rhys was out of the bed before the last note faded, pulling on his jeans.

Something under my ribs answered the sound with a sound of her own.

It rose in my throat, low and furious, and I couldn't stop it.

"Sierra." He turned. "Your wolf."

"I know."

"She's coming up. Not here, not on the sheets. Outside, now."

He grabbed his coat, wrapped it around my shoulders, and ran me down the back stairs into the cold.

The yard behind his house was a clearing of silver grass ringed with pines.

The moon stood directly overhead.

I let go of the coat.

The cold hit my bare skin for one second, and then the fur came.

My spine bowed and lengthened.

My hands hit the grass and were not hands.

The world rushed up all at once, with smell and sound and moonlight so bright it hurt.

The whole forest was alive in a thousand colors I had no names for.

I opened my jaws, and the howl that came out of me rolled down the valley.

It hit the ridge and came back.
