Chapter 24: The Head Seat
"I'm Gregory Ashcroft's daughter," I told the microphone. "That is the only question the law needs answered. The rest I'll tell my family tonight, at dinner."
The reporter blinked at the short answer. Leander took my arm and walked me back through the gate.
The lake house table had every chair filled.
My father sat at the head in his wheelchair with a blanket and a glass of plain water.
Bethany sat at his left, hands folded, and he had asked her to be there himself.
The housekeeper and the cook sat with us.
So did the young maid from the office, with her phone face down on the cloth.
Two of the estate guards stood near the door in their dress jackets.
Leander sat beside me. Under the table his knee pressed mine.
I put down my fork.
"I want to tell you who I was," I said.
The table went quiet.
"A little over seven weeks ago, Marin Ashcroft fell down the main staircase and died." I said it plainly. "Her heart stopped, and I think she wanted it to. She had been poisoned for years. She was tired."
Bethany's eyes went wide. My father didn't move.
"I wasn't born here," I said. "I was born four hundred years from now. I commanded a company in a war that I lost. I died on a field I'll never see again."
