Chapter 12: The Grand Princess
The Grand Princess was sitting up in bed with a bowl of congee on her knees, shouting at a maid about the salt.
"A pinch is a pinch, girl, not a landslide."
"Yes, Highness."
"Go. Boil it again."
The maid fled with the bowl.
Ruyun stood in the doorway with her hands hanging, and the old woman turned her head.
The sharp black eyes were exactly as she remembered.
The face had shrunk.
The silver hair was thinner, and the hands on the quilt were all bone.
For a long moment neither of them spoke.
"You have grown thin," said the Grand Princess.
"You have grown rude."
"I have always been rude. You were too young to notice."
Ruyun crossed the room in four steps and went down on her knees beside the bed and put her face in the quilt.
A dry hand came down on her hair.
It stroked once, and again, and it shook.
"Three years," the Grand Princess said above her. "I counted every day on the wall. I made the steward count with me."
"You said you were dying."
"I said no such thing. I said it would be good if the Marquis believed it." She sniffed. "A son will carry a dying mother home from a temple in a sedan chair with a doctor. A son will not do it for a healthy one. I wanted my own bed."
Ruyun lifted her head, wet-faced, and laughed.
"You lied to the whole camp."
"I lied to one steward and one boy. The boy, I trust, handled it with dignity."
"He sent soldiers."
"Of course he did." The black eyes sharpened. "Tell me about him."
"There is nothing to tell."
"Your ears are red."
