Chapter 23: The Chapel Again

The chapel on Las Vegas Boulevard still has the white aisle and the plastic roses.

On Saturday at four, every pew in it was full.

My cousins had flown in from Reno again, and the two girls from the desk sat in the third row in matching hats.

Behind them sat the entire front-desk staff, the bellhops, the night guards and a row of housekeepers in their church clothes.

All thirty-eight of my original guests were there, with the same programs, and I had counted them twice from the bride's room.

The long white box from the courier sat on the velvet stool in front of me.

I had not opened it.

"Throw it out," my mother said.

"I want to see it first."

"Why?"

"Because he wants me to be scared of it," I said. "I'd like to know what I'm not scared of."

I slid off the lid.

Inside, on black tissue, lay a small brass plaque, polished and heavy.

It was engraved with letters in the same style as the one in the lobby.

LACEY DVORAK. FRONT DESK. BOUGHT AND PAID FOR.

My mother made a sound I had never heard from her.

Odessa looked at it for a long moment and then took it out of the tissue.

"I'll have it melted," she said. "Into a doorstop."
