Chapter 24: The Plaque
The elevator to the top floor opened on the dark hall and the single soft lamp.
Rafferty carried me across the threshold in the plain ivory dress with Marianne's pearl at my throat.
"You're going to drop me," I said.
"I'm not."
"I'm heavier than I look."
"You're exactly as heavy as I want you," he said, and kicked the door shut behind us.
He set me down in the living room, where the Strip burned beyond the glass.
For a moment neither of us moved.
I was twenty-seven and he was thirty-four, and tonight nobody was watching us but the city.
"Take your time," I whispered.
"I plan to."
He turned me by the shoulders until I faced the window and found the zipper at the back of the dress.
He pulled it down inch by inch.
I felt each one at the base of my spine, the way I had on the night he first touched a zipper of mine.
"Do you remember that?" he said.
"You stopped at the bottom."
"I was a coward."
"You were polite."
"I was in love with you in the dark, and I wasn't allowed to say so."
The dress fell around my feet.
I stood in the glass in white lace and heels, with the whole Strip under me, and his hands came around my waist.
He kissed my shoulder, then my neck, then the place behind my ear, slowly.
