Pain went up my arm.
The mic was still in my left hand, so I raised it and spoke into it, level and clear.
"Let go of my wrist, Trevor."
"You're coming with me."
"Everyone can hear you."
He glanced down at the speaker by his foot, and his grip tightened anyway.
Then Cade was on the stage.
He hadn't run.
He had climbed the three steps at a walk and stood beside us, close enough to touch, and his hands hung open at his sides.
Every person in that room waited for him to swing.
"Let go of her, Trev," he said.
"Or what?" Trevor's laugh cracked. "You'll hit me? Go ahead. Hit me in front of everyone. I'd love to see it."
"I know you would."
"Then do it!"
"No." Cade's voice was even, almost kind. "You want to be the guy who got hit by the friend he beat. I'm not giving you that."
Trevor's mouth worked.
"You never had the guts."
