Chapter 4: The Deal

"The words are swimming," I said.

I pressed two fingers to my temple.

"It's the concussion. The doctor said no screens and no small print."

"I'll read it to you," Trevor said.

"And I can't hold the pen."

"Left hand."

"My left is a toddler's." I gave him a sad little smile. "Can it wait until my hand is better?"

His jaw worked under the skin.

Candice looked at him over her toast, waiting.

"It can't wait too long," he said. "The bank."

"Monday?"

"Monday," he said, and picked up the pen.

The buzzer went off.

All three of us jumped.

Trevor crossed to the intercom, and I heard a deep voice crackle through it.

"It's Cade. I'm taking Lainey to my sister's. She's a nurse, and she wants to look at the stitches."

"Right now?" Trevor said.

"Right now."

"We're in the middle of breakfast."

"Then it's perfect," Cade said, "because I've already eaten."

Trevor let out a puff of laughter and looked at Candice.

She gave a tiny shrug that said not to fight over it.

He turned back to me, all warmth again.

"Okay, baby. Go. Text me the second you're done, okay?"

"Okay," I said. "Who's Jo?"

"His sister," Trevor said. "She's fine. She's sort of rough."

I changed in the bathroom with the door locked.

I took my phone and my bag and the envelope, which I slid inside my sweater.

Trevor never noticed.

Cade's truck was parked at the curb with its engine running.

I climbed in, buckled with my good hand, and said, "Drive."

He pulled out.
