Chapter 24: Forever Is Plain
Inside the white paper lay a plain gold band, wide and heavy, cut for a man's hand.
Carmine turned it in the firelight and found the engraving on the inside, in small plain letters.
It said "Yours."
He did not speak for a long time.
Then he put it on his left hand, over the knuckle, and it fit.
"It's the first one," he said, "that I wanted."
That was Christmas Eve.
On Saturday morning at ten, St. Jerome's was full of daylight.
The doors stood open to the street, and the sun came through the high windows and lay across the pews in long gold bars.
I wore the white lace dress with the forty-two buttons, and nobody had torn a single one.
Teo had arrived with two handkerchiefs this time.
He sat in the front pew with the five old men and their wives, blowing his nose with great dignity.
The priest stood at the altar with his missal open.
Vince stood at Carmine's side, in a dark suit, where a best man belongs.
He had his father's old gold watch in his pocket, and he kept touching it.
I walked up the aisle alone.
I had told Carmine I wanted to, and he had looked at me for a moment and nodded.
The church smelled of wax and cold stone and pine.
Carmine stood at the end with his hands folded in front of him.
When I reached him, he held out his left hand with the gold band on it.
"You don't have to say anything," I whispered. "We're already married."
"I want to say it anyway."
The priest cleared his throat.
"We are here to witness a husband and wife renew a vow they made in a hurry," he said, dryly, "and in a better light."
