Chapter 24: The Stolen Seal
Tamir was at the door before the key stopped turning.
"Open it," he said, in the Hall voice.
It opened.
Sadeq stood on the threshold in deep blue, freshly combed.
Four of his house guards stood behind him, with the key and the ring on their pommels.
Behind them hovered the chamberlain, holding a cushion with two folded papers on it.
He wouldn't look at anyone.
On a new cord around the Grand Vizier's neck hung the black stone seal.
Tamir looked at it for a long moment.
"Eleven to four?" he said.
"Twelve to three, at dawn," said Sadeq. "One of your friends was very tired of carrying water."
His heavy eyes moved past Tamir to me.
I was laced and barefoot, with my braid down my back, standing beside the cushions.
I didn't pretend to be anywhere else.
"Perfumer," he said. "You're up early."
"So are you. Did you sleep?"
"Like a child." He stepped inside. "My daughter's bed was empty at the fourth hour."
"And a chest in my study is lighter than it was. I'd like it back."
"What chest?" said Tamir.
Sadeq smiled and lifted two fingers.
His guards went through the room.
They slit the cushions. They emptied the brazier onto the carpet.
