Somebody was hammering on the shop door before the sun was up.
"Open it! Open it, you married people!"
Tamir groaned into the pillow.
"Tell her we're dead."
"She'd only come up the stairs."
I went down in my shift with a shawl over it.
Laleh stood in the street in her riding trousers with straw in her hair and her eyes shining.
"She's had it," she said. "In the night. A filly. Gray, like her."
"Is it well?"
"It's perfect. It stood up in an hour. It bit the chamberlain when he came to look."
She grabbed both my hands and swung them.
"A year to the day since the water came back," she said. "That's a sign."
"Of what?"
"I don't know. Something good. Get my brother up."
Tamir was already on the stair, in his water carrier's coat, with his hair on end.
"Bit the chamberlain?" he said.
"Right on the hand."
"Then she's a sign of something very good."
Sahar opened the shop at the second hour, as she did every morning now.
She was nervous.
