Chapter 24: Lights Off
"One," I said.
Donovan stood in the doorway of the loft with his hand in mine and his breath coming short.
"Two."
"Billie."
"Three. Come on. I know where everything is."
I pulled him through the door and shut it behind us.
The dark was complete for the length of a heartbeat.
Then the window showed, a long gray rectangle at the far end of the room.
The stars stood hard and clear behind the glass.
The harbor breathed under the floor.
I could hear the boards tick as the cold settled in them.
"Four," he said, hoarsely.
"There you go."
"Five. Six."
I stopped counting aloud and put both hands on his chest.
His heart was slamming against my palms.
"Listen," I said. "My father said I did better in the dark than he did."
"I'm not afraid of it. So tonight, you don't have to be the one who sees."
"I want to see you."
"You've seen me with every lamp in Baltimore on. Now find me with your hands."
A long breath went out of him.
His hands came up out of the dark and found my face.
They were rough where the new skin had grown, and warm.
He traced my jaw with his thumbs, then my mouth, then the line of my cheekbone.
He read me slowly.
"There you are," he said.
"Here I am."
"Billie Ferrand."
