Chapter 15: The Envoy

The envoy of the Five Packs held his hearing in my father's hall, and Nolan was back in my father's chair.

He had washed his face and put on the peacoat.

The sad look sat on him.

I stood on the floor with Caleb behind me.

Westpoint's law covered me, so the Beta could shout all he liked about exile.

Beside the Beta stood the red-bearded enforcer with his burned hand wrapped to the wrist.

"Honored Envoy," Nolan said.

"My mate was taken from my home by Westpoint raiders."

"I went to the pier to bargain for her, and Lilia Hedlund met me with fire."

"My enforcer's hand will never close again."

The enforcer held it up.

"He had a silver knife at Tilda Rooke's stomach," I said.

"He was guarding her."

"He had it at an unborn child."

"My mate is distressed," Nolan said gently.

"She will say anything the Westpoint Alpha asks."

I heard Caleb breathe out through his nose, very slowly.

The envoy sat at the long table with his grey coat still buttoned, writing nothing down.

He had the flat patient face of a man who had heard every lie a pack could tell.

"I do not hear private quarrels," he said.

"I hear one question. May a child of mixed blood stand a Lake Shore challenge?"

"The law bars the seat," said the Beta.
