Chapter 19: Broken Open
He did not make it to the bedroom.
We came through the front door of the Point house at midnight on Saturday.
He kicked it shut behind us and pushed me back against it.
His mouth was on mine before the latch clicked.
I tore his coat off his shoulders, and he tore at my flannel, and a button hit the floorboards and rolled.
"Stove," I said into his mouth. "Rug."
The woodstove ticked in the corner of the big front room, banked and red, and a thick braided rug lay in front of it.
I walked him backward onto it.
He went down onto his knees without being told.
I stood over him and unhooked my overalls.
I let them fall and stepped out, and pulled the thermal over my head, and the red light from the stove ran over my skin.
He looked up at me with his lips parted.
He was shaking.
"Take your shirt off," I said.
He pulled it over his head.
"Everything."
He opened his jeans and shoved them down, still on his knees, and kicked them away.
He knelt naked on the rug with the scar bright on his neck and his cock standing up hard and dark against his belly.
I knelt down in front of him.
We were face to face, knees touching.
I put my palms on either side of his face.
"I want to see you," I said.
"You see me."
"No. I want to see all of it. What you don't show anyone."
He swallowed.
"Tonight you don't hold anything back. Not a sound. Not a word. If you want to cry, you cry."
"Rue."
"You've been holding it for five weeks. For nine years. Let go."
His chin shook.
"Hold me up," he whispered.
"I've got you."
I kissed him, deep and slow, and my hands slid down his chest and his belly and closed around him.
He cried out into my mouth and his forehead fell against mine.
I stroked him with a firm hand, and the sound he made was raw, almost a whimper.
"Tell me," I said.
"I don't know how."
"Try."
"I'm so happy," he said, and his voice cracked in two. "I'm so happy I can't breathe. And I'm so scared that it'll go."
"It's not going."
"I keep waiting for the floor to open."
"I'm right here on the floor."
A laugh shuddered out of him, and with it the first tears.
They ran down his face and he did not wipe them.
I lowered my head and kissed them off his cheeks.
"That's it," I said. "That's all of it."
I pulled him closer by the hips.
I got up on my knees, took him in my hand, and guided him to my entrance.
