Chapter 14: Everything He Saved
Lawson went inside, and the movers wheeled my grandmother's piano up the ramp.
I stood on the sidewalk and watched the truck door roll down.
Nobody on the street said a word.
When the truck pulled away, the old woman at number forty-one lifted one hand to me from her window.
I lifted mine back.
Then I got into the gray sedan and did not speak until we crossed the bridge.
"You're not going back to Somerville tonight," Ephraim said.
"Lawson has someone watching my building."
"I know. Selena said."
"Where am I going?"
"Somewhere with a doorman," he said.
His building stood at the edge of the Seaport, all dark glass over the water.
The elevator had one button for the top.
The penthouse was nearly empty.
It had a long gray sofa, a kitchen island with no clutter, and a wall of windows with the whole harbor in it.
The ships sat out there, lit by small lamps.
"It's very tidy," I said.
"I'm not here much."
"Where do you sleep?"
"There." He nodded toward a door. "Sometimes."
He took a folder from a drawer and set it on the island between us.
