Chapter 15: The Aldous Club
In the elevator at the Aldous Club, I fixed his collar for him.
It didn't need fixing.
"If Raymond asks what I am to you," I said, "tell him."
"Hallie."
"All of it. The word, the rate, the Friday envelope."
"It'll be on forty phones again by dinner."
"Then it'll be on forty phones because I chose it," I said. "Not because Lawson tricked me."
He studied my face.
Then he smiled, slowly.
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
The Aldous Club had dark oak, leather chairs, and portraits of men who had never been told no.
The dining room went quiet in small waves as we crossed it.
I wore my good black dress again, and Ephraim wore the plain suit from the magazine cover.
Heads turned to him, and then to me, and then to each other.
Raymond Aldous rose from a corner table with both hands out.
He was heavy and silver-haired, in the same charcoal three-piece suit, and his smile reached for Ephraim before his feet did.
"Mr. Stanwick. Mr. Stanwick. This is a great honor."
