Chapter 16: My Own Rules
On Friday morning I woke in a bed too big for me, with a plan.
Ephraim was already up, dressed in his plain suit, drinking coffee at the window.
"The auction is at noon," I said.
"I know."
"I'm going to a lawyer first, and then to Hargrove and Lowe. By myself."
"My car will wait at the corner," he said. "Empty. It doesn't have to follow you."
"It can wait."
He kissed my forehead and did not say another word.
That was how I knew what it cost him.
The young lawyer from Tremont Street was waiting on the steps of the auction house, damp at the collar.
He held a folder against his chest.
"Nana's will," I said. "It names the piano. Page three, line six."
"It says, 'my upright piano to my granddaughter Hallie, free of any claim by her spouse.'"
"I read it on the train," he said. "It's not marital property, Hallie. It never was."
"Then why did you not tell me that a week ago?"
"Because you didn't ask me about the piano. You asked me about the money."
He had the grace to look ashamed.
We went inside together, past a velvet rope and a case of silver spoons.
The clerk at the desk had a name tag and a worried mouth.
My lawyer set the will on the counter and slid a stamped notice beside it.
