The young lawyer called at eleven on Tuesday morning, out of breath.
I was standing in my grandmother's front room in my socks, looking at four pale squares on the rug.
"Hallie," he said. "It's done."
"What's done?"
"The judge read Aldous Capital's sworn statement at nine. She read the escort's affidavit at ten."
"Lawson's new lawyer asked for a continuance. She denied it."
I sat down on the floor.
"And clause nine?"
"Void," he said, and I heard him grin. "Procured by fraud. She called it, and I'm quoting, 'a clause written to be sprung by a trap its author set himself.'"
"Your equalization payment is released. The full one point two million, within ten days."
"And the hearing on Monday?"
"There isn't one."
"The Monday hearing on the forfeiture notice is struck from the calendar," he added.
I held the phone against my chest for a moment.
