The boardroom of Carrow Packaging has a table made from a single slab of walnut.
My grandfather's name sits on a brass plate at the end.
At ten sharp, eight board members sat down around it.
My father took the head of the table with his church pin on and a glass of water at his hand.
Colt sat at his right, gray-faced, with his phone in his lap.
A man in an expensive suit from the rival company sat against the wall with a contract folder, smiling at nothing.
Florence and I walked in at 10:01.
My father looked up.
"This is a closed meeting, Florence."
"I'm the corporate secretary," Florence said. "I keep the minutes. I have for thirty years."
She sat down in her chair at the foot of the table and set a gray banker's box in front of her.
"And Ms. Carrow?"
"She is my guest," Florence said. "Under the bylaws, a secretary may bring one."
He looked at the table and found no bylaw to stop her.
"Then let's be brief. The motion is to sell the company to our colleague here. The price is fair and the vote is simple."
