Chapter 21: Opal's Table
Opal's kitchen smelled of pot roast and lemon oil.
She had set the table for three with her good china, and a lamp burned in every window of the narrow brick house.
Mathias sat across from me with his tie loosened.
He had a plate of potatoes in front of him that he had not touched.
"You're staring at the pouch," Opal said.
I had it by my plate, unopened, where I had kept my eyes on it for the whole soup.
"You told me to wait," I said.
"I told you to wait for supper. Supper's done."
She poured tea with a steady hand, and then she looked at her grandson.
"Mathias. When you were nineteen you asked me whether your mother's cancer came from the wolf in your father."
"You asked if the bite had cost her."
He went very still.
"You told me it did," he said slowly. "You said the bite takes its due from the one who takes it."
"I said that," Opal said. "It wasn't true."
"I said it because you were nineteen and furious, and you wanted to run off and bite the first girl who looked at you twice."
"I wanted you to be afraid for a few years, so you'd be careful."
