Chapter 11: Come Home
Willa's POV
The Midwinter Ball was held in a hall with a thousand candles and a gold ceiling.
I stood in a small dressing room off the ballroom with my back to the mirror, trying to reach the clasp of my necklace.
"Hold still," said Otis, who could not reach it either.
"I'm holding still."
"You're vibrating. You've been vibrating since breakfast."
"I'm not vibrating."
"You're a woman who got kissed in front of three hundred people and then slept on a sofa all night in a vampire's study, and has not mentioned either of them to me."
"I mentioned the sofa."
"You said it was a sofa. You said it in a very small voice."
I laughed, and he nearly dropped the clasp.
The dress was midnight blue with a low back, and Ottoline's dressmaker had made it in three days without asking me a single question.
I had not looked in the mirror once.
"Let me," said a voice from the door.
Tiernan stood there in black tie, with his hair brushed back.
Otis looked at him, looked at me, and said, "I'm going to find the canapés."
He left without waiting for permission.
Tiernan came across the room and took the ends of the necklace.
His fingers brushed the back of my neck, cool and light.
I felt my skin rise under them.
He did the clasp, and then he left his hands where they were, on either side of my neck, for the space of one breath.
"Tonight," he said, quietly. "Stay near me."
"Another rule?"
"A request."
"Why?"
"Because every Court will be in that room, and your father will be in it, and I will be easier in my mind if I can see you."
