Chapter 13: Three Years of Silence

I stared at him.

The man I had cut a silver bullet out of could not say the one thing I needed said.

"Nan," I said, without looking away from Conrad. "Take Tobin to the kitchen. Get him food."

"Child."

"Please."

She stood slowly, with her hand on the boy's shoulder.

Tobin looked back at me once from the door, with my mother's eyes.

Then they were gone, and it was only the two of us and the fire.

"Three years," I said.

"Linnea."

"Three years you knew how she died."

"Yes."

"You sat across a table from me at the border meeting and asked how the harvest was."

"Yes."

"You let me go back to that house every night for three years, with him at the head of the table carving the meat."

He did not argue.

He stood there and took it, and that made me angrier.

I walked out of the study and he followed me down the corridor to the room they had given me.

It had a lock on my side of the door, like I had asked.

I did not turn it.

I dragged my sweater over my head, still stiff with the cabin's smoke and his blood, and threw it at the wall.

I stood in the middle of the room in my jeans and my plain grey bra, shaking, with my mother's key on its blue thread against my skin.

He stopped in the doorway.

His eyes went to my shoulders, and then he made them go back up to my face.

"Say it," he told me. "Whatever you need to say."

"You wanted me out of my father's house."

"I wanted you safe."

"You wanted me out of there so you could keep a promise to a dead man!"

My voice cracked on the last word.

"You never told me why you were different from him," I said. "You said 'mine' in a garden, and I took it for what it was. Another man who looked at me and saw a thing to take home."

"It was not that."

"How would I know? You never gave me the one fact that would have told me!"
