Chapter 19: Whose Hand Wrote It
My father took one long breath, and the color came back into his face.
By the time Nan had walked to my side, he was smiling again.
"Nan Whitaker," he said warmly, to the ring. "Greywater's old midwife. I'm sorry to say she was put out of my pack for stealing from my house, and for filling a child's head with fairy stories. Alphas, she is eighty if she is a day, and her mind is not what it was."
"I'm sixty-eight," said Nan. "And my mind is the same as it was when I pulled your daughter out of her mother."
Someone in the ring coughed to hide a laugh.
"Speak, midwife," said the keeper.
Nan folded her hands on her shawl.
"I'll make it short, because I've said it too many times in my head," she said. "Fifteen years ago my Alpha's mate, Isabeau, came to my back bedroom in the middle of the night with a six-week-old son. She told me she was leaving. She went out into the dark with him in her arms, and I followed her at a distance, because I wanted to see her over the bridge. She never reached the bridge. Roderick Hartwell caught her at the river and drowned her in the shallows with his bare hands."
The hall was silent.
"And the baby?" said the woman in brown.
"I took him from the reeds. He's standing next to me."
Every eye went to Tobin.
He stood very straight, with his hands behind him.
"This is absurd," my father said, with a short laugh. "I'll tell you what happened to my first wife. She went walking on a wet night and slipped in the river. I found her at dawn myself. I carried her home. Every wolf in Greywater will tell you so."
"Every wolf in Greywater will tell you what you told them," said Nan.
"Do you accuse me of lying?"
