Chapter 13: Hollow
Nobody in the great hall moved.
The plum stone was still in Riko's cheek, her eyes were streaming, and eight dragons were looking at her.
Kagiro had not looked away from her once.
"Lord Kurosumi," said the Eldest from the head of the table, in a dry little voice. "You have heard what Hakuzan says. Is it true?"
"It is true."
A murmur ran down the table.
"For how long?"
"Three hundred years."
The gold-bearded lord whistled softly through his teeth.
The tall woman in green put her hand over her mouth.
Hakuzan folded his hands in his silver sleeves and looked sorrowful.
"I take no joy in it," he said. "But the law is plain. A hollow lord cannot hold a peak."
"The law is plain," the Eldest agreed. "So is the season. We do not strip a mountain at a feast table."
She tapped the wood with one small finger.
"At the Thaw Council, on the night of the spring equinox, we will sit in this hall again."
