Chapter 21: The Last Flask

On the last evening before the Thaw, the flask gave its last bead.

Riko squeezed it over her palm, and a single dark drop of tare rolled out, and then only air.

She held it up to the lamp.

The plastic was clouded and warm from her pocket, and the label had worn away to nothing.

It had come with her out of a grill fire, a whole world away.

"That's it," she said quietly. "That was the shop's own recipe. I'll never make it again."

Kagiro looked at the drop on her palm.

They were in his room, and the shutters were open on a clear cold sky full of stars.

There was snow on the sill, and the fire in the grate had burned down to a red glow.

"You could make it again," he said.

"Not the same."

"No. Nothing is."

She touched the drop to her own tongue and held it there.

"Then we share it," said Riko. "The last of it. Slowly."

His breath caught.

She took his face in both hands and kissed him.

He did not rush.

He took the taste from her mouth a little at a time.

His eyes closed.

"There," she whispered. "That's it. Sweet and smoke."
