Chapter 24: Seconds
Riko woke the next morning in his bed with the sun on her face and his arm across her ribs.
It was spring.
She could smell it through the open shutter, wet earth and plum blossom and snowmelt running in the gutters.
Kagiro was awake, and had been for some time, watching her.
"Good morning," he said.
"What time is it?"
"I do not know. I have not looked."
"The village is coming for breakfast. Daigo said so."
"Daigo can wait."
His eyes were warm and amber and unhurried.
"You asked me once what I wanted," he said. "On the summit. I said a morning."
"I remember."
"This is it."
Her chest ached with how much she loved him.
She turned in his arms, put her palm on his cheek, and kissed him.
He kissed her back slowly, as if there were no end to the day and nothing in it he had to do.
They were not in a hurry for the first time.
His hands moved over her, light and warm.
She let her fingers trace the scales along his arm, and the bumps of his spine, and the base of each horn.
