Chapter 24: Fair Winds
On the second Saturday of December the crew painted a new blue stripe on the Marguerite and took her down the river.
It was Dad's old tradition, a winter run on the day the yard closed early, and nobody had kept it for three years.
Fourteen of them came, with wives and husbands and kids in life jackets, in the yard's two workboats and six skiffs.
The old planker stood on the dock with a line in his hand.
He cast off the bow himself.
"Fair winds, boss," he said.
"You're not coming aboard?" I said.
"I'm taking my skiff. This boat has a captain now, and it isn't me."
Myra stood at the wheel in a canvas jacket with her braid pinned up, and she looked as if the boat had been built around her.
"Cast off," she said. "Before I change my mind about letting you steer."
"I wasn't going to steer."
"Smartest thing you've said all week."
We eased out of slip nine, and the fleet fell in behind us in a line.
The river was flat and gold.
Gulls rode the air beside us, and the swing bridge stood open ahead.
The first thing we passed was the waterfront park.
