Chapter 20: Fitting Room

Two weeks later, Portia was on her knees in a costume trailer with six pins in her mouth.

The show was a cop drama shot in Burbank, and the lead's trousers were too long.

It was her first week on a new job.

Nobody had recognized her on the lot in forty-eight hours.

She counted that as a win.

"Portia," called the head of the department from the doorway. "Your ten o'clock is here."

"I don't have a ten o'clock."

"He's on the sheet. A guest fitting. He booked under the name of Mr. Smith."

Portia took the pins out of her mouth.

"Is Mr. Smith six foot one with a scar on his chin?"

"I'm not allowed to say."

"Why not?"

"He tipped me forty dollars to stay out of it."

Behind her, the trailer door opened and the light changed.

"Good morning," Malachi said.

He wore a plain navy suit with one sleeve a half inch too long, and he looked entirely serious.

Half the department was now standing around the racks, pretending to count hangers.

"Mr. Smith," Portia said.

"Yes."

"Stand on the box."

He stepped up onto the little wooden box and held his arms out from his sides.

She walked around him, once, with her tape measure over her shoulder.

"What are we dressing you for?" she asked.
