Chapter 14: The Sorting Table

The shaker started on Jesse's own trees at six on Monday, and by nine I could not stand it.

He had gone out before light with the hired crew, and I had slept in his flannel shirt until the engine noise reached the porch.

At nine I carried a thermos of coffee to the cleaning shed behind the house.

It was a tin lean-to with a concrete floor, a hopper and a long wooden sorting table scarred by forty years of nuts.

He was there alone, running the first load across the table with both hands.

He had sawdust on his forearms and a smear of grove dirt along his jaw.

"Crew's at the far end," he said without looking up. "They won't be back for the next bin until ten."

"I know," I said.

"You came for something."

"I came to watch you work," I said.

"That's a lie," he said.

"It's a little bit of a lie."

I set the thermos down, took off my jacket and laid it on the end of the table.

He looked up then.

His eyes went over me from my boots to my braid and stopped on my mouth.

"Susie," he said, quiet. "I'm covered in dirt."

"I know where I want you covered."

I took the sorting scoop out of his hand and put it down.

I hooked my fingers in the front of his belt and walked backward until my hips met the edge of the table.

"Lift me up," I said.

He lifted me by the waist and set me on the wood.

Pecans rolled off the far side and rattled on the concrete.
