Chapter 15: Jesse's POV
Jesse's POV
I drove to Fort Valley with both hands on the wheel and did not ask her one question.
That is how I do it.
I wait until the thing is in front of me, and then I look at it.
She gave me directions in a small voice.
Left at the light, past the feed store, down the road with the railroad tracks.
"Where are we going?" I asked once.
"You'll see."
I saw a sign.
It was twelve feet wide, white with black letters, bolted to a long tin building behind a gravel yard.
PETTIGREW PECAN HULLING. FORT VALLEY, GA.
There were nine trucks in the yard.
Small growers' trucks, with their beds heaped in pecans, and men I knew from the Grange standing in a line at the scale house.
Every one of them was cussing.
I could hear it through the closed window.
"Pettigrew," I said.
"Yes," she said.
"Pettigrew charges the county half again what Daddy's huller does."
"I know what Pettigrew charges," she said.
I parked.
She got out first, and I followed her across the gravel.
