Chapter 23: Christmas Eve in the Grove
Susie's POV
On Christmas Eve he built a fire in the pecan rows and spread his grandmother's quilt beside it.
We did not go in until the fire was coals.
The ground had frozen hard that afternoon.
The trees stood bare and black above us, and the stars were thick.
I sat on the quilt in my coat with a thermos of cocoa and watched him feed the flames.
"Daddy came to the pump house," Jesse said, without turning around.
"When?" I said.
"Tuesday. He sat in my chair an hour. He read the first one."
"All of it?" I said.
"Most of it. He said, 'Huh.'" Jesse's mouth quirked. "Then he asked me what the sweeper payment was for January."
I laughed until I had to wipe my eyes.
"That's all you got?"
"That's more than I ever got."
He sat down beside me and put his arm around me, and the fire popped.
For a minute we watched the sparks go up.
Then I turned and put my hand flat on his chest.
"Jesse," I said.
"Mm."
"I want to ask you for something."
He went very still.
"Anything."
"I've never done it," I said. "I've never wanted to. I want to with you."
He looked at me, and I watched him understand.
His pupils went wide in the firelight.
"Say it plain," he said, low. "Tell me exactly."
"I want you in my ass."
His breath went out of him in a rush.
"Susie," he said.
"I've thought about it for a week. I thought about it in the truck and at the Grange."
