Chapter 13: Two Idiots

Rhys carried Lydia back to the clinic before the rain stopped, and he carried Cade to my gate at first light.

Cade could still walk.

He chose to be carried the last hundred yards, because the porch steps were beyond him now, and he hated it.

I did not let him past the kitchen.

I put him in the chair by the stove, and Hattie put a mug in his good hand, and I told him all of it.

Godfrey's plan, the full moon, the Langford who would take his seat, the baby born after.

He did not interrupt me once.

When I was done, the mug was still in his hand, full, and the tea had gone cold.

"He raised me," Cade said.

"I know."

"My father died when I was twenty-six, and I didn't know how to sit in the chair. Godfrey sat beside me every night for a year."

"I know that too."

"He told me what the Law said about moon-madness." His voice was flat. "That it spreads. That it goes for the unborn first, because a pup has no wolf of its own to fight it."

"And you believed him."

"I saw Lydia's eyes go black. I looked at you, and I looked at the baby, and I thought, if he's right, I have minutes."

"You had me," I said. "You had me standing there telling you what I'd said to her."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you ask me one question?"

"Because if I asked, and you were lying, I'd have to do it anyway."

He put the mug down on the table with a careful hand.
