Chapter 15: Nine Days in Her Room
Carys's POV
Cade came to my door that night with a folded page inside his shirt.
The guard let him in, because he was still the Alpha on paper.
The suite was Lydia's old one, with her curtains and her closet, and a lock on the outside of the door.
He sat on the very edge of the bed and gave me the page without a word.
His fingers were colder than the paper.
I stared down at the fourth line.
"Where was Godfrey?"
"On the porch. Lydia came in the door while I had it in my hand."
"She told him?"
"She looked at me for the longest silence of my life," he said. "Then she said, 'Grandpa's coming. Go out through the kitchen.'"
I held the page against my chest.
"She let you walk out."
"I don't know why."
"I do," I said. "She's afraid of him."
He looked at my belly, and then he looked at the lock on the door.
"I'll get you out of here."
"Not yet," I said. "Go and be seen being sick. Hattie's coming tomorrow with food."
He went.
I put the brown page inside my pillowcase, under the lace.
They held me nine days.
On the second morning, a cook in a flour-white apron brought my tray and set it down too hard.
"My boy is on your door tonight," she said. "He doesn't like it."
"Tell him he doesn't have to."
"I told him." She wiped her hands. "My gran told me, when I was a girl, that the Moon Drop cuts both ways. Whoever signs pays. I thought it was a bedtime story."
"Did anyone tell Cade?"
