Chapter 19: Before Moonrise

I walked the ridge path to the Moon Drop with Hattie at my elbow.

The sun sat low and red behind us.

A mile is a long way this heavy.

I stopped three times.

Each time, someone on the path stopped with me.

By the second turn, I had a cook, her son, two laundresses and a night guard walking at my back.

By the third, I could not hear my own footsteps for theirs.

The shelf was crowded.

Two hundred wolves stood on the granite in a half circle.

The Moon Stone lay on its iron chains at the edge, with every strap new.

Godfrey waited in the middle with the Law Book open on his arm.

A stub of white chalk sat in his other hand.

Seven elders sat behind him.

The old woman sat last, with her stick between her knees.

Cade sat on a bench by the rock wall, with Rhys beside him and the brown page nowhere I could see.

His eyes found me and did not leave.

I did not look at the pool.

I looked at Godfrey.

"Carys Harriman," he said, in his soft voice, to the whole shelf. "You are charged before the pack with breaking the elders' writ, with stealing a sick girl from her ward, and with the casting of moon-madness."

"I've answered the last one."

"The matter rested. It did not end." He lifted a hand. "The law says the law-keeper may reopen what rests. I reopen it."

"On what proof?"

"On the girl's own ravings, which the pack has heard." He turned to them. "Lydia, my own blood, was locked in the ward last week because she is ill. The Luna broke her out."

Murmuring ran through the crowd.

"The old law is clear," Godfrey said. "A pack member who casts moon-madness is condemned. The Sentence is signed, and the Stone goes down before the moon is up, so that the moon may judge."
