Chapter 10: Five Keys
On Friday it rained on the ice.
By seven in the morning the whole yard was gray glass and the eaves of the schoolhouse were pouring.
The cold snap was over.
The thermometer on the engine house door said thirty-eight, and I stood at the window with a mug and hated it.
"Thaw," Ansel said behind me.
"That's what the radio promised."
"I know what the radio said," I said.

The Red Cross had called Gilles on Thursday.
A woman there had found a furnished apartment in Newport with a month's rent paid, and a phone number to ring.
Gilles had put it on the table next to the oatmeal and said nothing.
I sat down at the long table.
Four men sat down with me, and Gilles came in last, with rain on his shoulders, and stood at the head of it.
Normand put something in the middle of the table.
