Five Firemen Carried Me Out, and Not One Will Put Me Down novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: The Porch Light
The first frost came on the second Friday of October.
Gilles carried me across the threshold of the farmhouse with the porch light burning over our heads.
I had moved in on the first of the month, with one truckload and a dollar in an envelope.
Tonight I wore my wool coat and nothing under it, and my braid was down.
Four men came up the porch steps behind us, and the door closed on the cold.
"Don't put me down," I said.
"I wasn't going to," said Gilles.
He climbed the stairs with me in his arms.
The house creaked under him, and the dust sheets were gone from the hall.
Normand carried the lantern behind us, and Ansel carried the quilt, and Emile and Tibo came last, whispering.
Halfway up, on the landing where the old window looked over the yard, I put my mouth against Gilles's ear.
"Here," I said.
He stopped.
The landing was wide and square, with a window seat and a long dark mirror on the wall.
He set me on my feet in front of the mirror.
I stood naked in my open coat in the lantern light, four foot eleven, and behind me stood a man who filled the glass.
"Look," Gilles said, very low.
I looked.
His hands came around me and spread across my ribs.
They met over my sternum and covered both my breasts.
"I can hold all of you," he said.
"Let me hold all of you."
"Hold me," I said.
He lifted the coat off my shoulders and dropped it.
His hands moved down my body in the mirror, slow, from breast to belly to hip.
The glass gave me back his big dark hands on my pale freckled skin.
His mouth went to my neck.
I leaned back against him and watched his hand slide between my legs.
His fingers parted me and stroked, long and light, and in the mirror I saw my own mouth fall open.
"Watch," he said.
"That's what I see.
"That's what I've seen every night since January."
I came against his hand with my eyes open and fixed on his in the glass.
I came slowly, with a long soft cry, and the others on the stairs below stood still to hear it.
He turned me around.
