Chapter 5: Her Terms

"Say what you want," Adam said again.

"I want you to stop asking me what I want."

"Then tell me what to do."

I stared at him.

He sat very still, and he waited.

For three years I had been the one who adjusted, and here was a man who wanted to be told.

My heart was banging against my ribs.

"I have terms," I said.

"Tell me."

"Until Sunday, you do what I say. And you never ask me to explain those four."

"Until Sunday," he said. "Agreed."

"Not a word about them."

"Not a word."

"I mean it."

"I know you do."

I stood up in my bare, bandaged feet and picked up my bag.

In the side pocket was a small bag from a lingerie store.

I had bought it for Evan three weeks ago, planning to wear it on the last night of the trip.

I went into the bathroom and shut the door.

Black lace, a corset cut high at the hip, and sheer stockings with a garter belt.

I put them on in front of the mirror, and for the first time in a year I liked what I saw.

When I came out, Adam was standing by the bed with his jacket off.

He looked at me and didn't breathe.

"Sit," I said, and I pointed at the edge of the mattress.

He did.

I sat on the edge of the bed in front of him and crossed one leg over the other.

The stocking whispered against my skin.

"Kneel," I said.

He slid off the bed and onto the carpet in front of my feet.

His shirt was open at the collar, and his chest rose and fell fast.

"Take it," I said, and I lifted my foot.

He wrapped both hands around my ankle.

He bowed his head and pressed his mouth to the arch of my foot.

The kiss was slow, and I felt his breath through the silk.

He kissed the arch, then the ball of the foot, then the inside of my ankle.
