Chapter 8: Soft Hands

"Yes," Colin said.

He said it to the floor.

My mother made a small sound and sat down on a barstool.

My father put his glasses back on and stared at the taps.

"How much?" he asked.

"A hundred and fifty thousand," I said. "About. Between the deposit, the rent and the equipment she cosigned for."

"Wendy, I'll pay it back," Colin said. "I swear on my life."

"You've sworn on your life since you were nine."

My father stood up.

He was a quiet man, and his hands were shaking, and I wanted to look away.

"You're going to tell every person in this bar the truth," he said to my brother. "And then you are going to sit down with your sister and a lawyer, and you are going to sign a payment plan."

"Dad."

"Or you close this place. Your choice."

Nobody in the taproom was drinking now.

The server in the black apron had taken out her phone, and she was typing fast.

My mother reached for my hand.

I let her, but I didn't hold it back.

"Wendy," she whispered. "I'm sorry. I didn't know."

"You didn't ask."

She had no answer for that.

I walked out through the bar with my head high and my knees weak.

The parking lot was cold and smelled like rain.

I was unlocking my car when someone said my name.

Rohan was leaning against the lamp post.

He was in blue scrubs, with a paper badge clipped to his chest and a hospital lanyard around his neck.
