Chapter 11: The Coat

"Think about what you could lose," Corrine said.

She said it kindly, with her head tilted.

I held the door open about a foot.

"Motion," I said. "That you leave. All in favor?"

Behind me, Ronan raised his hand.

"Two to nothing," I said, and shut the door.

I heard her heels on the wooden stairs, going down slowly.

The third step gave under her, and she swore.

I leaned my back against the door until the sound was gone.

Then I turned around.

Ronan was standing by the kitchen cabinets with his hand still half raised.

He lowered it.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I should say this now, while you can still throw something."

He swallowed.

"I picked the wrong shot of the coat. I knew it was the wrong one, and I wanted the one that would get seen."

"And?"

"Then it was nine million views, and my name was in the credits, and I got a bonus."

"You got a bonus?"

"Four hundred dollars."

"For my face."

"Yes."

"Say what you did."

"I made you famous for the worst thing that ever happened to you," Ronan said, "and I took four hundred dollars, and I told myself it was only an edit."

My hands were shaking again.

I crossed the room before I could think about it, and I took hold of the front of his shirt.

He put both his hands up, open, at his shoulders.

"Don't," I said. "Don't stand there like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you'll let me hit you again."

"I will."

"I don't want to hit you."

I kissed him.

It was nothing like the careful almost-touch at dawn.

It was hard and angry.

He made a sound into my mouth.

His hands came down on my waist and held on.

He walked me back until my spine met the brick wall.

I pulled his shirt up and over his head.

His chest was warm and lean, with ink on his ribs from a pen that had leaked in his pocket.

I put my mouth on the place under his collarbone and bit.
