Chapter 15: Ballots
Ronan drove, and I watched the stream on my phone the whole way.
Fourteen thousand people were watching my father sell my bed.
"Do I hear fifty?" Dad said to the camera. "A solid oak frame, gently used by a very ungrateful girl."
The chat scrolled by in a blur of laughing faces.
The house on Linden Street had every light on.
Colm was on the front lawn in his hoodie, with a white drone on the grass.
A ring light stood beside him, and a second phone was propped on the mailbox.
A banner on a stake read: COLM FLIES, LAUNCH DAY.
"Whoa," he said when he saw me. "You can't be here. We're live."
"Good," I said.
I walked past him and up the steps.
Dad was in my room with the clipboard.
The walls were bare, and the boxes sat in a row on the carpet.
He had the rosary case in one hand.
"Nessa," he said, in his host voice. "Everybody, it's the middle child. Come to buy something back?"
"I've come to take it."
"That's inventory, honey. The family fund owns everything in this house."
"Then call a vote."
He blinked.
"On the rosary," I said. "Right now, on camera. It was my grandmother's, and she left it to me in her will. Count the hands."
He looked at the lens.
Fourteen thousand people were waiting for him to say yes.
"We'll let the audience weigh in," he said, and smiled, because he had never once turned down a vote on camera. "Type Y to sell, N to give it back. Thirty seconds."
