Chapter 23: The Fund
The kitchen on Linden Street was quiet for the first time in my life.
There was no ring light, and no phone propped against the sugar bowl, and no one saying "and we're live."
My father sat at the head of the table in yesterday's suit.
He had not been to bed.
A bank statement lay in front of him with a dark ring on it from a coffee mug.
I stood in the doorway with Ronan behind me, and I did not sit down.
"Hearth has frozen the fund," he said, without looking up. "The lawyers called at six."
"I know."
"Forty million views by morning. They are calling it the fraud of the year."
"It was."
"You've destroyed us," he said. "Your mother is leaving for her sister's in Dunmore. Colm took the car."
"Did he?"
"I'm told he's applying to a drone company in Allentown."
I almost smiled.
Then Corrine came in through the back door with a manila folder, in jeans, without makeup or her ring.
Her eyes were swollen.
She sat down across from my father and put the folder on the table.
"I did the math," she said. "All of it. Five years of deposits, every other Friday."
"Corrine," Dad said.
"Be quiet."
I had never once heard her say it to him.
"The number is a hundred and seventy thousand, six hundred and twelve dollars," she said to me. "That's your pay, to the cent. It doesn't count the interest, or Hearth's bonus. I've signed over my twenty percent of the playlist, and Mom signed hers last night."
