Chapter 22: Moonlight
Emmett was on the porch of the cabin with an armload of kindling.
"I did not see anyone," he said. "I was never here."
"Emmett."
"The stove's lit. The roof's patched. The healer's girl made you a quilt. I'm going to go look at a different tree."
He set the kindling by the door and clapped Jarrett on the shoulder, hard.
Then he went down the trail whistling, and did not look back.
The cabin was the same one room.
It had a woodstove, a window facing the valley, and a bed with a bright new quilt on it, stitched crooked by small hands.
Somebody had hung a lantern on the nail by the door.
For the first time it did not look like a hiding place.
Jarrett closed the door behind us and did not lock it.
He leaned back against it and looked at me in the Luna's shawl.
"Take that off," he said. "Slowly."
I let it slide off my shoulders onto the chair.
The moon had come up over the valley, full and white, and it laid a long bar of light across the quilt.
