Chapter 5: Rogue Blood

The alpha's house stood at the top of the hill, a long timber lodge with a porch light that was never turned off.

I had been inside it exactly twice in eleven years.

Tonight I walked up the steps and knocked on the door like anyone else.

Jarrett opened it himself.

He had showered and changed, and he looked better than he had on Emmett's floor, but his eyes were hollow.

"You came," he said.

"I came for one answer."

He stepped back to let me in.

The big front room had a stone fireplace and a long couch and a wall of framed photographs of Colefields.

Not one of them had my face.

"Who was my mother?" I said.

He went still.

"Calla said to ask you. So I'm asking."

"I don't know her name."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not." He shoved a hand through his hair.

"My grandmother signed the paper that let you in when you were six, and she sealed the file."

"Why would she seal it?"

"Because your mother was a rogue."

"I know my mother was a rogue."

"The law says a rogue-born can't sit at the Moon Stone."

I stared at him.

"A wolf with no pack can't take a vow, and her child can't take one either," he said.

"My grandmother told me the week of our first kiss."
