Chapter 30: The Signing
The first person to sign the Compact of Miami-Dade, in public, in ink, was Mack Crandall.
It was before dawn on Saturday morning, April 17, at the ventanita of La Caridad.
He had driven down from the Trail in the dark.
He stood at the window in his camouflage jacket with his sunglasses folded in his pocket.
Yosi handed him the page and a pen on a chain.
It was the one page my grandmother had cut, printed on white paper, four lines and a blank.
"Read it first," said Yosi.
"I know how to read, son."
"Read it anyway."
Crandall read it with his lips moving.
I stood at the espresso machine and watched the corner of my window.
I had been told what would happen, and I did not believe it.
He wrote his name on the line.
A window opened in his head, and I knew because he stopped in the middle of the stroke.
