Abuela opened the ventanita at dawn on Sunday morning, April 25, the way she has opened it every morning since 1984.
She lit the machine, wiped the steel and set out the first two cups.
One was for me.
The other was for Joelle, who came down the back stairs in a gray sweatshirt with her braids loose and took it without a word.
Abuela looked at the stairs, then at the clock, and said, "You are on time."

I noticed that the revolver had stayed at home.
