Chapter 8: Ask Him the Date

My mother told me to wait until Tuesday.

I made it to Wednesday.

The Stags held media day at the arena before every home stand, and the family pass on my keychain still scanned green at the staff door.

Nobody had thought to cancel it.

I walked down the concourse in my old navy coat, with the divorce petition folded in my hand.

The press room was full of lights and folding chairs. Twenty reporters sat facing a podium with a Lakeshore Bank banner behind it.

Travis stood at the microphone in his team blazer.

"I want to thank everyone for their support at this private time," he was saying. "My wife and I are focused on doing what's best for the family."

I stopped at the back.

A woman in the last row saw me and nudged the man beside her.

Heads turned one at a time.

Travis saw me last.

His eyes went to the petition in my fist, and the smile on his face stayed exactly where it was.

"Lee. This isn't the time."

"I have one question."

"We can talk afterward."

"It's one question, and you can answer it here."

I walked down the aisle between the chairs. My heels were loud on the concrete.

"What date did we separate?"

The room went quiet.

"This filing says June first," I said, and held it up. "On June first you drove me to my injection appointment and bought me a lemon tart on the way home. Say the real date, Travis."

"Our marriage was over emotionally long before that."

"What date?"

A reporter in the second row spoke up. "Mr. Holloway, did you share a home with your wife in June?"

"We shared an address."
