Chapter 29: Twice

He sank a few more feet.

His ringless hand drifted up past my face, bleeding at the knuckle.

I thought of the old man behind the glass for nineteen minutes.

Son, open the door.

Letting Corbett drown out here would be a mercy.

A quiet one, in the dark, with nobody watching.

That was the one thing I would never give him.

I went down and took him by the collar of his white jacket.

I didn't breathe for him.

I didn't have to. He'd been under less than two minutes, and I had my heart back.

It set us down on the dance floor as gently as a hand.

Then it slid back over the side and was gone.

Four hundred people stood frozen in a ring around us in the spotlight.

My tail lay across the polished boards, blue and silver and whole.
