Chapter 19: Northshore
"One point four million," I repeated.
"Clean. Real. Your name, your pen, your lawyer reads every page."
She slid a card under her empty glass.
"I'm in your Room Six tonight. I booked it under my own name, in case you wondered. Think about it until tomorrow's dinner."
She stood up and left a fifty on the table for the server.
I put the fifty in the tip jar for the man from Iowa.
I put the card in my apron pocket.
It burned there for the rest of the night.
At midnight I sat at the kitchen table with the mail I hadn't opened all week.
The hospital in Duluth had sent Hedy's bill.
After the inn's cheap insurance, her share was eleven thousand four hundred dollars.
Hedy had sixty dollars in her coffee can and a sister with a bad hip.
I did the math on the back of the envelope.
One point four million dollars.

Buy her a little house in Duluth on one floor, with no stairs.
